Our consultant haematologists investigate and treat conditions affecting the blood and blood-forming tissues. Private patients with any suspected blood disorder can be seen by our experienced consultants. The appropriate tests will be organised for you, with correct and timely interpretation.
Our consultants treat malignant blood disorders such as myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and lymphoma.
Anaemias and bleeding disorders are also treated by our specialists. Anticoagulation therapy is provided for patients who are being treated for heart conditions or who may be at risk of heart attack or stroke.
For peace of mind, our laboratory offers quick turnaround on blood test results.
The most common conditions we see patients for are listed below. However, if you have any other concerns, please contact a member of our friendly team on 020 8546 6677 to discuss.
Anaemia
Anaemia is the most common blood disorder. It happens when your body has fewer red blood cells than normal, or when they have less haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is the part of your red blood cell that carries oxygen. If you have been referred by your GP it will normally because your tests have shown something unusual. You can book an appointment with one of our Haematology Consultants and get an appointment as soon as is convenient for you.
Leukaemia
Leukaemia (sometimes spelt as leukemia) is a cancer of the blood cells. If you have leukaemia, your body makes some abnormal blood cells. These leukaemia cells behave differently from healthy blood cells. There are four main types of leukaemia: chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML); chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL); acute myeloid leukaemia (AML); and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)
Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system helps protect us from infection and disease. It is part of the body’s immune system. There are many types of lymphoma. Different types develop and are treated in different ways. Our consultants can identify the type of lymphoma by collecting some lymphoma cells and testing them in a laboratory
Myeloma
Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that arises from plasma cells in the bone marrow. During its early stages, myeloma may not present any noticeable symptoms. The disease may be diagnosed in a routine blood test before symptoms are noticed. However, over time, myeloma will cause symptoms to appear as the disease develops.
Lymph node enlargement
Swollen glands are usually a sign the body is fighting an infection. Swollen glands caused by an infection will usually get better by themselves within 1 to 2 weeks. However, we recommend seeing one of our consultants if: your glands are getting bigger or they have not gone down; they feel hard or do not move when you press them; you're having night sweats; you have no other signs of illness or infection; you have swollen lymph glands just above or below your collar bone.
Obstretic haematology
Pregnancy naturally increases blood volume and demand for iron, putting extra strain on the body. Obstetric haematologists develop personalised antenatal care plans, manage medications safely, and coordinate with midwifery and anaesthetic teams to prevent complications like postpartum haemorrhage
The first step for any patient is usually an initial consultation. Unless your GP or insurer has told you otherwise, you should book your first appointment with a member of our haematology team.
